Aftercare guidelines
The surgery takes a day. The result is decided over the next twelve months — mostly by what you do in the first two weeks. This page is the complete, honest timeline, including the stage that frightens everyone.
Real healing, unretouched. Knowing what each week looks like in advance is the difference between confidence and 2am panic.
Day by day, week by week
- 1First 72 hours
Protect the grafts
Sleep on your back, propped at 45 degrees with the neck pillow from your kit. Nothing touches the recipient area — no hands, no pillow contact, no cap. Use the saline spray as instructed. Mild swelling of the forehead on day 2–3 is common and passes.
- 2Days 3–14
Wash, don't pick
Daily washing exactly as taught — the full technique is on the hair wash page. Scabs lift on their own by day 10–14; picking one off early can take the graft with it. No gym, no sweating, no swimming, no sauna, no direct sun on the scalp.
- 3Weeks 2–4
The shed
The transplanted hairs fall out. Almost all of them. This is shock loss — expected, universal, and the single most common reason patients think their transplant failed. The follicles stay; only the hair shafts shed before the real growth cycle begins.
- 4Months 2–4
The quiet stretch
The mirror shows almost nothing. This is the patience tax every patient pays. Gym and sport are back from week 3–4; normal haircuts (scissors first, clippers later) from week 4.
- 5Months 4–12
Growth, then density
New hairs arrive fine and soft, then thicken over months. Judge nothing before month 8; judge everything at month 12, when your review is checked against the written plan.
Red flags — message us the same day
- Fever, or spreading redness beyond the treated areas
- Discharge or a bad smell from donor or recipient area
- Pain that increases after day 3 instead of fading
- Bleeding that doesn't stop with light pressure

Protecting the hair you didn't transplant
Your grafts are permanent — but the native hair around them is still subject to pattern loss. The patients whose results still look complete at 55 are usually the ones who protected their existing hair with medical therapy.
